What should I be doing in the North Carolina area during Jan-Mar to prepare for the spring season?
  1. Feed the bees if a warm spell is forecasted. (Have the syrup ready for placement on the hive when it warms up.)
  2. Inventory your supplies (tools, hardware, hive bodies, etc.) to ensure you are ready to properly work your bees. Call or text me if I can be of help. (704-791-8745)
  3. Ensure that the entrance area is unobstructed for the start of the sprng season.

I am a beginner and have ordered a package of bees that will be installed in late March. What items would you suggest that I have on hand to be ready for installing them?
  1. Select a site for your bee hive(s) and prepare the site. (Proper direction of bee opening, leveling ground, hive stand, clear any obstacles to flight, etc.).
  2. Purchase the book "Beekeeping for Dummies" and begin learning about the basics of beekeeping. (I have copies for sale at my store.) Take notes and highlight facts that are important for you to remember.
  3. Get clear instructions on how to install the package of bees once you pick it up. ( My staff will provide a simple demonstration at the time of pickup at my store and written handout information.)
  4. Ensure that you have the following equipment or purchase same when you pick up the package of bees.
Bee smoker, grocery bag of pine needles, grill lighter (or matches), hive tool, bee veil and gloves, spray
bottle full of  "sugar water", front feeder with quart jar of "sugar water" (or top feeder),  complete hive body,
spare broad chamber (optional), two 10 inch 2x4 blocks, hammer, needle nose pliers, and a pocket knife.
(Place all items in a card board box for easy transport to the site.)

What are the benefits of belonging to a local bee association?
  1. Learn from the successes and mistakes of others.
  2. Learn where to buy the materials as your colony grows and materials are needed.
  3. Meet others and make new friends!
  4. I belong to Stanly County's Bee Association and assist with teaching classes as needed.
